SWARM ARENA 2019

Together with Japanese Telecommunications Provider NTT, the Spaxels Research Initiative team developed a swarm robot performance that envisions possibilites to augment, complement and elevate future live sports viewing events. The robotic swarm, composed of 39 groundbots, conveys the multifarious aspects of sport spectacles to viewers in a way that completely breaks through the boundaries of a conventional rectangular video format. Performing together with the robotic swarm, modern-day alchemist Akiko Nakayama and musician Ei Wada demonstrate creative possibilities of the application of the swarm technology. It’s sports viewing, re-imagined – designed to revolutionize the way we view and relate to big sport spectacles.  

SWARMS OF THE FUTURE

The swarms of the future—in other words, autonomous systems of the future—will be driven by novel, artificial concepts such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. This will have a direct impact on the individuality of the individual components and/or the autonomy of the robots and their communication among themselves as an interacting group.

SWARM COMPASS

The basic concept behind Swarm Compass is to help people navigate by utilizing swarm intelligence. Going beyond simple signage to swarmbased social communication services is a task that the Japanese telecommunications company NTT and the Ars Electronica Futurelab have cooperatively invested in by using the Spaxels.

SKY COMPASS

A collaboration between Japanese telecommunications giant NTT and the Ars Electronica Futurelab, Sky Compass is the first step towards a vision of employing drones (or UAVs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in public signage, guidance and the facilitation of traffic. It manifested in a series of special demonstrations at the NTT R&D Forum 2017 in Musashino, Tokyo.
