SPAXELS RESEARCH INITIATIVE (SRI)

The Ars Electronica Futurelab’s Spaxels Research Initiative develops tools that implement the theoretical understanding of swarms—or multicellular robotic organisms (MCROs)—in actual practice, and subjects this “reified future” to a variety of different considerations. In this context, Spaxels are only a single possibility of integrating the general public into this discourse; after all, this is a matter of an ongoing process of development in this field, and of subjecting it to consideration and assessment along ethical criteria. However, the development of precisely these criteria in the first place demands integrating our society into a broad discourse. The Spaxels Research Initiative’s mission is to make the necessary experience and information available to the general public now and to initiate this discourse.

SWARMS OF THE FUTURE

The swarms of the future—in other words, autonomous systems of the future—will be driven by novel, artificial concepts such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. This will have a direct impact on the individuality of the individual components and/or the autonomy of the robots and their communication among themselves as an interacting group.

SWARM COMPASS

The basic concept behind Swarm Compass is to help people navigate by utilizing swarm intelligence. Going beyond simple signage to swarmbased social communication services is a task that the Japanese telecommunications company NTT and the Ars Electronica Futurelab have cooperatively invested in by using the Spaxels.

SKY COMPASS

A collaboration between Japanese telecommunications giant NTT and the Ars Electronica Futurelab, Sky Compass is the first step towards a vision of employing drones (or UAVs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in public signage, guidance and the facilitation of traffic. It manifested in a series of special demonstrations at the NTT R&D Forum 2017 in Musashino, Tokyo.
